Have you ever had a party and planned for a specific number of people but more came? That was Thursday for the education team. We introduced the mobile libraries to two communities and also had literacy activities to do with the children. We hoped we’d have 40 people and were prepared for 70. The first community, Hilapo, was perfect. Parents, children, and one preschool teacher (about 55 total) were there for our workshops and fun. All went great and the people were thrilled with the books.
Next we went to Carmen. We were a little late…Nico time…and people were waiting outside the community center. And I mean people! They were standing in the front of the building, sitting on the hill on the side of the building and in back; some kids were even in a tree. It was the smallest community center we had been to and the people poured in…..130 at one count. We had oranges for 80. It was loud, hot, and packed! And so much fun. After the ‘classes’ on talking and ‘reading’ to children, we told a story, made flowers out of coffee filters, acted out a play, and let the kids ‘have at’ the books. There were lots of hugs and smiles as we left exhausted, sweaty, and very pleased with the afternoon.
